World of Warcraft Artifact Knowledge Cap Reduced & Mixed Reaction From Community

The World of Warcraft team has released a message about a very large "hotfix" being applied to the game today in North America and tomorrow in Europe. The hotfix involves the reduction of the Artifact Knowledge cap from 50 to 40.

Developers Notes: In the 7.2 PTR cycle, we raised the Knowledge cap from 40 to 50, which is very cautious: we wanted to ensure that all playstyles players and alt characters can view the Concordance of the Legionfall trait as accessible. However, between the additional Artifact Power gains added in 7.2 and others that were hotfixed in after the patch released, we have now exceeded that standard. Knowledge 40 now seems to be enough to keep the players on each Concordance of the Legionfall, and months of additional Knowledge still left to research makes some players feel like their efforts have no meaning. Therefore, we're rolling the cap back to 40.

According to some participants, the Collecting Artifact Knowledge beyond the 40 level will become very meaningless, because a lot of grind involved to collect enough to attain a level. According to one player's comments:

Very disappointed with this change to AK. This effectively makes the AP worthless for some time, because the gains towards the Concorde ranks will be very small. It is indeed frustrating to add 200 new to each level, and the prospect of needing hundreds or thousands of tokens to get a single rank is really depressing. If the investment is so small, then how will I actually get the AP anymore?

A second "blue post" further explained after some players objected to the changes:

As part of the desire to increase overall AP revenue, the Artifact Knowledge cap was raised from 40 to 50 late in the Patch 7.2's development. However, after the release of 7.2, we realized that increasing the base Artifact Power gains would be better than relying on Artifact Knowledge (which takes time for players to research and can make gains earned in the interim not feel as meaningful).

Since 7.2, we have deployed several hotfixes to improve AP gain in some areas, one of which is the Elite Strike missions available while the Command Center is active. Now that these changes are live, the acquisition of AP is generally faster, so we think that 40 is now the appropriate cap for AK and isn't as daunting a prospect to reach.

We also hope that players have a solid stay of AK research, at which point they will have more freedom to focus on their alts. In addition, the highest level of Artifact Power is being reduced from "billions" attained to a maximum of 500k,  thereby making the grind to achieve artifact levels in the infinite trait that much longer.
