Last year, after Blizzard shut down the Nostalrius server, the vanilla World of Warcraft preservation project was restored earlier this month - and now it's gone again.
A more curious story that appeared late last year was the sudden closure of the "World of Warcraft" server, known as the "legacy" project. Nostalrius' fan-style legacy servers are maintained by "World of Warcraft" players, who believe Blizzard has lost some of its current iterations of its incredibly successful MMORPGs. Nostalrius was created to replicate the original World of Warcraft before any expansion was established, establishing a considerable follow-up until Blizzard closed the project midway through 2016.
However, this story is not over yet. When Blizzard failed to resolve its position on the legacy server in Blizzcon 2016, Nostalrius mods handed over its core data and player information to another project called Elysium, aimed at restarting World of Wacraft's legacy servers. From all accounts, things have run smoothly since - Elysium's server has recently reached more than 30,000 concurrent players in four areas - until today, Nopertium manager Viper, announced they were pulling their support for Elysium and thus would be retracting the data they had given the Elysium team:
“Today, only 10% of the former Nostalrius players have generated a token to join Elysium…we believe that we failed to satisfy this community entirely, as at the same time legacy fans acquired a reputation of ‘pirates’ on the official WoW community.”
While 10% of the former Nostalrius servers are still nothing to scoff at, this is the case later on Viper, which is the main reason Nostalrius pulls the Elysium project plug-in. Viper said winning the prestige as a "pirate server" would make it impossible for specialized traditional communities in their efforts to sway Blizzard to support their efforts, so the Nostalrius team thought it would be best to end the project rather than further damaging its reputation.
Despite the fact that many players are happy to honor some of World of Warcraft's oldest traditions or events, this drive does not achieve enough fan support to allow Blizzard to seriously consider implementing an official legacy server for World of Warcraft. Part of the reason may be because Blizzard of Warcraft from the past mistakes in learning to benefit, developers want their players continue to buy and play with a new World of Warcraft content.
The project will not be completely shut down, though, as Elysium plans to continue its better database and core itself, with the project's administrator said, "Nostalrius handed us the torch we did not intend to put it." Nonetheless, Nostalrius represents the largest portion of the World of Warcraft heritage community, and if they withdraw support, it places the legacy of World of Warcraft's current state in serious doubt.
